CIVTA MEETING NOTES    JULY 27, 2011

Meeting was called to order by Jeannie Stall at 7:06 p.m.

16  were in attendance, including Dr. Lynne Seibert and Mr. Chuck Berra, both  from Elanco/Lilly and

Allison Fank, with Midwest Vet. Supply in Des Moines.

Meet & Greet:  Question of the evening -- “ What is your favorite way to “beat the heat” during our

    100°+ heat index days”?

OLD  BUSINESS:

An announcement was made to remind those present of NAVTA’s request for volunteers for the

2nd Annual Greenies Pet Oral Health Event , to be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday July 31,

 2011 at local PetCo facilities.

The creation of 4 Vet. Tech. Program scholarships is progressing well.  DeeDee will give an update on them at the August meeting.

NEW  BUSINESS:

The CIVTA Board members met to discuss ways to increase our monthly meeting attendance.  This discussion lead to an option of sending a CIVTA member to a couple of the Greater Des Moines area Veterinary Clinics/Hospitals each month to speak to their staff members about all the CIVTA has to offer.  The CIVTA would present each Practice with a “snack basket”, along with information on accessing a SurveyMonkey.com survey.  Linda Blazek-Garvin and Lori Martindale volunteered to make some of these deliveries.

Since the CIVTA owns a FAX machine, a request was made for someone willing/able to send out our monthly meeting reminder fax.  No one in attendance volunteered.   Lori Martindale stated their Practice received a faxed invitation to tonight’s  meeting earlier this week and asked the origin of it.

Jeannie Stall stated that she composes the announcement and then e-mails it to Nicole McFarland, at Midwest Vet. Supply in Des Moines.  Nicole has graciously offered to send out our meeting notices  to Midwest’s listings via Midwest’s e-mail system.   These e-mail’s actually arrive on the FAX machines at the various Practices.  It was decided that as long as Nicole and Midwest Vet. Supply are willing to send out our announcements, we will continue to utilize their complimentary service.

Nominations for new President, Secretary and Historian will be made at next month’s meeting with elections to follow in September.  Jeannie Stall asked those in attendance to give thought and consideration to this matter and to take an active part in their Association.

Iowa Animal Hall of Fame candidates for 2011 need to be nominated by Aug. 1, 2011.  Animals may be nominated in one of three classifications:   Hero  /  Companion  /  Professional (Service). These nominations may be made online via the IVMA website  www.iowavma.org  or turned in to the IVMA office in Ankeny.

The CIVTA Board will arrange a time to meet at the Storage Unit to clean out unneeded items and decide if there continues to be a need to keep renting this  ~ $ 46.00/month space.   Our rent is currently paid up for 6 months, so a decision will need to be determined by this December.

Information regarding  a job opportunity and several C.E. opportunities was made available to those present  .

A delicious Fazoli’s Italian meal was provided by Elanco’s Mr. Chuck Berra and  Sara Tasler, CIVTA member.  It was a great success!    DeeDee Schumacher will be in charge of the August 31st meal.  Our guests that evening will be Dr. John Cary and Ryan Ong , with Boehringer Ingelheim.   Dr. Cary will give a presentation on “Congestive Heart Failure”.

Our guest speaker tonight, Dr. Lynne Seibert, with Elanco-Lilly, gave a wonderful presentation on the

wide-spread  prevalance of “Behavior Issues” in  veterinary patients .  She discussed techniques for  establishing a protocol for evaluating these cases, along with methods used to improve the quality of both the pet and pet owner’s lives.   Behavior issues are an increasingly higher concern for our clients.  The entire Veterinary Team  can benefit from addressing these concerns and in doing so,  make a huge difference in the lives of their patients and clients.   Dr. Seibert and Mr. Berra provided numerous brochures, training guide DVD’s, note pads and pens for those in attendance.

A  drawing for door prizes followed  the presentation, with gift certificates from Brown Dog Bakery,  PetSmart, Target  and Olive Garden  going to Lori Martindale, Jen Firzlaff, Sara Tasler and Mary Cooper.
