Animal Caretaker – part time no benefits

Des Moines University is currently accepting applications for an Animal Caretaker who will be responsible for the general care of animals in the animal care facility on weekends, holidays and during the absence of Animal Caretaker II.

Qualifications include:

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in animal care.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have the ability or be able to learn the operation of the following equipment: autoclave, University vehicle, water distilling equipment, bottle washer, clothes washer and dryer, incinerator, computer, pressurized hose, calculator
  • Must enjoy working with all species of animals.
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

The perfect candidate has a love of people, values the health of pets, enjoys engaging with people and their pets. You must possess a solid knowledge of veterinary technician and general office skills including: restraint, surgical and anesthesia protocols, ability to lift animals, laboratory, dental care, radiographs, pharmacy, client education, answering phones, utilizing veterinary software and medical records.
